Six-year-olds are great party-goers! At this age, they are becoming more articulate, learning to read, understanding social situations better and able to focus more readily on games! It's a great age for a birthday party and your party options as a parent multiply!
Planning:
Six-year-olds will definitely want to be involved with the planning portion of their birthday party. Let your child explore theme and make decisions based on your time and your budget. It's a great time to let them learn some of these skills. You can look at party favors, plates and decor together online as well as over an invitation list!
Activities:
Six-year-olds are maturing, but they still do best with structured games and activities. Some ideas for this kind of activity are:
Activity stations:
Cover tables in butcher paper and lay out crayons, paper, set up a cookie or cupcake decorating station, or even set up a simple craft that goes with your theme! Make it simple and fun and allow friends/relatives to help monitor the activities.
Games:
As with any game, have the adults walk through the games and demonstrate the rules. This avoids confusion!
Fishing: Allow the kids to go "fishing"! Have an adult set up with small toys behind a false wall and set up a stick with string and a clothespin. Ask the child to "cast" their line behind the wall and an adult will attach a small party toy to the clothespin. Each child can have three tries for small toys. It's a fun game in which everyone comes out with a prize!
Musical Chairs: Kids are just getting to an age in which they can enjoy musical chairs or freeze. Get someone to control the music while another watches to see who is the winner as the game moves forward.
Limbo: We all know how this game goes! As the game above, make sure that you have an adult running the music and another watching the game!
Cake and Food:
At this age, it is still a good idea to take as many pictures as you can BEFORE the cake is served!
Pizza or finger food is always an option before the cake, but again, make sure you get pictures before the food!
Shows/Entertainment:
We recommend shows that will engage the kids attention but also challenge them! Six-year-olds are curious and FULL of questions! Audience participation is a must for this age! With that in mind, we have some suggestions:
"The Cooking Show" (photo below) is fun and entertaining. The Queen of Cuisine will stir the children through recipes of fun while preparing Mean Soup, spaghetti, ooobee goobies, peanunt butter and spinach sandwiches, pizza, and more.. An old lady may swallow a pie while the kids are playing the fried chicken game!
"Wacky Weather" is a great show for this age. Our performer becomes in house weather forecasters with detailed maps of the USA. They cover droughts, floods, tornadoes, volcanoes and snowstorms in a fun and educational way. Kids will love learning all about the weather and how it occurs!
Face painting is a hit with this age group! Six-year-olds have their imaginations engaged when they are painted like a tiger, a princess, a butterfly, a superhero, etc. Creative play is encouraged when their faces look entirely different! Face painting is always popular and a great photo opportunity!
